Syracuse, Sicily

Syracuse, Sicily, is situated on the east coast of the island facing the Ionian Sea. It is an ancient city, founded around 733 BC by Greeks as part of their colonisation of Sicily and southern Italy. Syracuse, Sicily, grew to become one of the most powerful cities in the ancient world competing with Athens and Carthage and becoming for a while an ally of Rome. Syracuse, Sicily, was highly praised for the beauty of its buildings and for its works of art.

Today Syracuse, Sicily, is an important cultural centre offering visitors a whole range of monuments reflecting her ancient history. Staying in Syracuse, Sicily, is a pleasure not only for the monuments but also for the walks through the old town of Ortygia and around the harbours. Syracuse, Sicily, is a good place for boat trips, for seeking out the smaller sites and for excursions down the coast, to the nature reserve at Vendicari and to the Baroque hill towns of Noto, Modica and Ragusa.
