Biography

Jeremy Dummett is a British national, brought up in Melbourne, Australia. He read history at Trinity College, Cambridge. During a long vacation he took a course in Italian at Perugia University which started a lifelong interest in Italy. He has maintained contacts with the country ever since and is fluent in Italian.

His professional career, which was in marketing with international companies, took him to Athens for two years and to Milan, on different occasions, for over ten years. He also worked in the City of London. Latterly he acted as consultant to banks, which included work in Central Europe.

Retired in 2002, he has been a frequent visitor to Sicily since 2004 when he became fascinated with Syracuse. Finding no book that told the story of the city and its monuments, he decided to write one himself. The project brought together a number of his long term interests: Italy, the Mediterranean, history and travel writing.
